I wrote this poem as part of the 20-day writing challenge I set myself. The prompt was mythical creatures and I decided to write about fairies. I began writing as soon as I got back from my daily walk and was reminded of the little doors hidden around the city I live in. Surprisingly, there was one tucked next to the bins of a house we walked past and it got me thinking. This was the result.
They insist you don’t exist,
As if the stars in the sky
Aren’t the most paralysing lights
I’ve ever seen.
Who else could spawn them but creatures with wings?
I’ve seen your homes,
Tucked beneath grotty stairwells
And next to worn out bins,
Setting us alight
Wings disappearing behind the door.
A life to envy.
